I find it crazy that the stigmatization in the funeral industry is really serious. They really take there job serious and try not to make any jokes or funny words about death. They don’t even say death they say “passing on or meeting an untimely end, etc.” They do this to not disrespect the dead or the other person who is planning the funeral. It is really crazy how stigmatization can work in different situations.
(H) 135-146: Goffman, The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life
Goffman really had me thinking at the beginning of this chapter. Like what, is this really true, are we human begins good actors and don’t know our real self? He said we act different around friends, family, home, school, while on a date, while shopping etc. This does make me question human behavior because like we really do act different around different people and places. So like do we know who really are if we act different. Overall Goffman explains situation of how when someone enters the room you will look at them and they will react on how you look at them. Overall, the individual will have many ways to control their impression they receive from the situation. This is so true because you will react to how other people are looking at you and also how the environment is in that situation.
(JCB) Chapter 10 Branding/The Self and Social Interaction
Goffman said “How we present our self depends on the particular “stage” we are on, and also the kind of impression we seek to convey to our “audience”. ” I believe this is so true because my parents always told me how I dress and present my self every-time I leave the house is how I am presenting them and how I am making them look. For example my parents told me if I look bummy than I make them look like they didn’t raise me right to get ready for the day etc. I do believe that brands also have a lot to do with our self identity. When I was in high school I didn’t have an i phone and everyone else did and I felt like I wasn’t cool because I had a Galaxy so it made me feel like I was poor because my parents couldn’t afford it. I questioned myself like how can everyone else afford it but not my parents? I really like this chapter because it makes a lot of sense how we identify ourselves through brands but also how family and friends thoughts about us can manage/create our own self identity.
(H) 63-72: Pager, Would You Hire an Ex-Convict?
Trying to find a job out of jail is really hard especially if your black. The study in this chapter showed the difference of a black men and a white men that went to prison and has a criminal record trying to get a job. Black men didn’t get a call back at all it was only a 5% chance but as fir a white men they have a 17% chance of getting a call back. This makes me really mad because it should not be like white men should not get a higher chance if getting a call back just because they are white. Everyone should be equal. This is why we still have a problem with race still today.
(JCB) Appendix 401-424) Advertising/Research Methods
This made me really think about commercials and how much really goes into making one. You can’t just make a commercial and put it out there you have to think about the people are going to react. For example like in the text it said ” just because your little brother seemed to become more aggressive after watching an ad for the latest Marvel superheroes movie doesn’t mean that all young boys would respond in this same way.” I find this really true because what if other people don’t know about Marvel. This goes to all types of commercials not everyone is going to understand or react to it in a certain way because not everyone know about the whole story of the commercial or what it is trying to say. Also with commercials they have to be careful making them because everyone will have a different opinion so they can not make them with religion or values.
(H) 29-47: Henslin, Doing Sociological Research
I do believe that “in order understand people’s behavior we must understand their symbolic worlds” (Henslin 32). This makes so much sense to me because not everyone is raised in the same country and has different behaviors. So once we understand how their symbolic world is we can understand that is why they behave that way. I find it interesting how Sociologist gather their research and they can don in many ways. The diagram in page 37 really shows how to do research. Breaking all the steps down really makes me understand how you get the end result and how it all makes sense.
(H) Miner, Body Ritual Among the Nacirema
I found this reading really weird to me. Then agin it says right in the title Nacirema is American backwards and how we see the miner and body ritual a different way. This chapter was interesting because it had different rituals and they were weird. The one thing that stuck out to me was covering the woman parts. In different countries if a man were to walk in on a woman naked it was different for every woman and their ritual to cover a certain body part. For example , in Japan it would be there feet they would cover but as for here in America it’s out breast and private area. It’s crazy to actually see how different Countries have different rituals and how we see them.
(JCB) Contrasting Marxist and Durkheimian Perspectives
Tamales in Latino culture means a lot. A tamale means “The Virgin Mary a mother who carries seeds for the future within herself as well as the fertility of the fields and the bounty of the harvest. So we can se this food as both the mother of God and the mother of us all. ” (sjvtribune.com) If we didn’t have tamales then we would not be as religious as us Latinos are. Our people will not be able to pass on the meaning of the tamales and it will ruin our culture.
(JCB) Chapter 2: Food/Culture
It’s crazy to think that we have certain foods that mean something to us. Food in some countries can me a lot and we also have cultures that have food and meaning to them. Every single culture has different type of food. Overall, it describes who that person is and what race they are or from. I wonder why or how it started with different types of food.
(JCB) The first thing I bought was……
The first thing I bought was clothes from Forever 21. I was so happy because I actually made money on my own to buy my own self clothes I liked and love. My clothes didn’t last long because I grew more and plus they were old. This was a great purchase because I needed clothes. Forever 21 is a big store so I thought if I bought my clothes there they would be nice and last a long time. The clothes there are pretty expensive so I didn’t get a lot just a couple of stuff.
