(H) 497-507 Leidner, Over the Counter at McDonald’s

Looking at the way they break down everything in McDonald’s is really crazy and I find it interesting because I know it works like this in other places to. Also this makes me look at McDonald’s a different way. I guess you can say I appreciate them a little more but then again I don’t eat there a lot.

(H) 411-424: Ehrenreich, Nickeled and Dimed

This chapter really got to me because I can really relate to it. I have tried so many of these things on counting my money and my time to see if I can live on my own. In reality I can not and won’t be able to survive. Yes many people do and they survive but me I would just stress myself out. Welfare does help a lot of woman and I am glad they have that for the ones who really need it because being poor sucks.

JCB p.79 Fight for $15

I think the fast food campaigns should fight for a $15 hour minimum wage because to some people that is there only job. Not only that but fast food industry is really big and provides everyones needs to eat. As for unionization yes I think there should be one for fast food places because it will make things more organized and more successful. Also it will give fast food a good success rate and won’t be look at as a job that is not enough. At the end of the day a job is a job and I believe that no job should be looked at bad because it is nit you working that job and also its not your place to judge for someone else job.

JCB p.79 Corporate Ideologies

A corporate brand that me and my family really means something to us is Levi’s. This brand is meaning full to us because it never let us down me and my family always where Levi’s. My dad is a truck driver so his clothes and pants last him a long time and for me, my sister and mom they really make us feel good about ourselves. This brand is for everyone and everyone’s size it has no diversity. Even in the commercials about Levi’s they have every race and gender in them because they are for everyone. I think they are a good price because they way they feel and last a long time.

(JCB) Chapter 3: Fast Food/Work and Economy

This chapter is really interesting because I am a fast food worker and I never really looked at fast food workers in any way. In todays world there are some people that see fast food workers as not getting paid enough or not doing enough in life. I am barely starting my life and I need a degree to get the job I want but if it is an older person still working at a fast food place they get looked at as why are they doing this when they should have another job. When people look at us different it makes us feel like we are not doing enough or making enough money. When people do that it makes that person not want to enjoy when they are working so thats why they have an attitude.

JCB p.105 Coffee Shop Ethnography

I am at Starbucks and everyone is in their own little world. Some are by themselves and some are with their loved ones or friends. No one is talking to strangers they are talking to the ones they came with. Also the fact that everyone is on their phone and have headphones on doing their own thing. This place does not feel friendly at all and no one looks comfortable than others besides the workers but that is because they are doing there job. This coffee shop caters to older people in every race. College students and older people are mainly in here because they are doing homework and business meetings and other stuff.

(H) 269-276: Meyer, If Hitler Asked You…

If Hitler asked me to electrocute someone of course I would do it because I am scared of him and because he is in higher power than me. In this chapter an experiment was done by Milgram and he showed in the experiment how we do something if it is ordered. I find it interesting that 12 out of 40 actually continued to electrocute the person even though they knew it hurt the person. This really makes me question people are willing to do anything if they are ordered. My thing is was it for the money or was it because they were ordered to? In the end it was because they were ordered and I can see why we as people do things if we are order to because the other person is in higher authority.

Required Entry: JCB p.140 Shopping for “we-ness”

I remember I would always wear pants that were from Walmart in high school. In high school every girl would wear pants only from American Eagle. I felt like I didn’t belong because my friends will always ask me have you tried American Eagle pants and I would say no. I saved my money to buy one pair of those pants and let me tell you they were not cheap. After I bought those pants I wore them the next day and I felt like I was accepted more that day because I was like every other girl wearing a pair from there. That day everyone was saying they liked my pants and I was happy about it.

(JCB) Chapter 5: Shopping/Social Order

I didn’t think shopping of being a way we are and shapes us. In this chapter it talks about social solidarity and anomie. Social solidarity is a group of people that like the same things. Anomie is ” a concept that makes us understand why shopping might appeal to people who lack social connections: if you feel isolated and lack a sense of purpose, going shopping may be a way to try to counterbalance those feelings, to provide a sense of purpose in your life, and feel connected to the larger group. ” I see shopping as a tool to create social solidarity to address the problem of anomie. Durkheim believed that societies with strong social solidarity were likely to have lower suicide rates because individuals who are well integrated into a larger social group were less likely to feel the despair and isolation that can lead somebody to take their own life. I believe this supports both social solidarity and anomie because no one likes to be alone and shopping is a tool for people to talk to people and find people who like the same thing and have someone to talk and hangout with.

How does strian roles and conflict roles operate your life?

Role strain operates in my life by me being a student. I have to do well in school and don’t mess up and get good grades. As for role conflict I am a worker, daughter and a student. I have all these problems to face which for a worker I have to come to work everyday. Being a daughter I have to be a good example for my younger sister and watch her sometimes. Being a student I have to study and do homework for school. This both operate my life a lot.
